General Race Information
When and Where
5.30pm Registration opens. You can pick up your race number and registration pack on the night from the main registration in the Muritai School Hall, Muritai Rd, Eastbourne. Provided there is space in a category, you can register on the night.

Other important info …
Refueling. Sausages from the sizzling BBQ and hot drinks will be available for purchase during and after the race. Please make sure you bring come cash along.
Entry is limited to 400 people. 50 in the Vasque Extreme Nighttime Madness and 350 across all other categories.
First aid will be available at the start/finish.
Water. There are water taps at the start/finish and you can take water from the creek if you wish. You must provide for and carry your own water.
Photos. You will be able to download for free the photo’s that are taken during the event. Following the event, we will send out an email advising you of the website hosting the photos.
Butterfly Creek Nighttime Madness is for all ages (7 years upward) and abilities. The race takes place in the East Harbour Regional Park and there are 3 course lengths. Course one is designed for walkers and youth. Course 2 is designed for runners. Course 3 is the Vasque Extreme course for experience adventure runners.
Please note for the Butterfly Creek Nighttime Madness events, you need to compete as a pair. That means you need to start, race and finish together. Finish times are not recorded until both racers have crossed the finish line.
Limited to 25 pair (50 runners) || 15.4km with a 480m climb
This is night time adventure running at its very best. Over a course of 15.4km with a 483m climb, much of the route follows the mountain ridge. As some parts of the track are not well marked, the Vasque Extreme Nighttime Madness is for experienced adventure racers and mountain runners only.
The start is at Muritai School grounds, Eastbourne. This race heads from the school grounds up Rimu St to Muritai Rd, then left along Muritai Rd to Ferry Road in Days Bay. From here it is a climb up to the end of Ferry Road and onto the Ferry road track to the ridge. Once at the ridge you head south along the track over Mt Hawtrey and into Butterfly Creek, you come out of Butterfly Creek taking the Kowhai St route till you get to the Bus Shelter / Kowhai St junction at the top of the ridge. From here you follow the Bus Barns Track down to Muritai Rd. Once at the bottom you follow the waterfront to finish in the Muritai School Hall.
Please note there are cut off times for the Vasque Extreme Nighttime Madness. These are outlined under the rules and conditions. Map ready and compass skills are important in this event. Compulsory gear is needed for this event, please see rules and conditions. In this category we do not distinguish by gender.
An ideal event for all levels of fitness
WALKERS || 8km with a 295m climb
The race start is at Muritai School grounds, Eastbourne. The race heads from the school grounds up Rimu St to Muritai Rd, then along Muritai Rd to the Muritai Park track and up the track to the ridge. From here you follow the track to Butterfly Creek turnaround point. Then it’s back along the track, taking the Kowhai St route. Once at Kowhai St, you head to the waterfront and then along to finish in the Muritai School Hall.
RUNNERS || 9.64km with a 295m climb
You take the same track as the walkers until you get to the Bus Barns / Kowhai St junction at the top of the ridge. From here you follow the Bus Barns Track down to Muritai Rd. Once at the bottom you follow the waterfront to finish in the Muritai School Hall.
MACPAC Youth Challenge and the Young and the Restless Challenge
This category takes the same route as the walkers for the Butterfly Creek Nighttime Madness Classic. Please note in this category we do not distinguish between runners and walkers or by gender.
Prizegiving will be held in Muritai School Hall at 9.45pm. Please note, you need to be at prizegiving to receive your prize. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest pair in each category.

Spot Prizes ~ Will be drawn from pre-registered racers as well as spot prizes on the night.
Local Eastbourne and Bay Prizes
- Fastest local pair across all the Classic Runners categories.
- Fastest local pair across all the Classic Walkers categories.
- Fastest local pair across all the Vasque Extreme Nighttime categories.
Locals must be registered as such before registration closes.
Family Group Challenge
There will be a prize for the family with the largest number of people taking part. To qualify each member taking part must be related directly in some way or another e.g. mother, son in-law, cousin. Team members can form as many race pairs as they wish. I.e. if 8 group members take part, you can form up to 4 race pairs and you will still be counted as a team of 8. Family members must be registered as part of your group before registration closes.
Business / Sports team Challenge
There will be a prize for the business or sports team with the largest number of people taking part. To qualify each person must work for the same organisation or play for the same sports team. Team members can form as many race pairs as they wish. I.e. if 8 group members take part, you can form up to 4 race pairs and you will still be counted as a team of 8. Sports team members must be registered as part of your group before registration closes.
